The federal government loves its acronyms. But BASIC is one that all DOT-regulated motor carriers need to know.  

BASIC stands for Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Category. (Yes, it’s a mouthful.)  

The Controlled Substances/Alcohol BASIC is one of seven categories that the FMCSA uses to determine how a motor carrier ranks compared to other carriers with a similar number of safety events (think inspections, violations, or crashes).
