If either of the following are true, you are required to obtain your interstate Operating Authority (MC Number) to operate legally:

• You transport federally-regulated cargo in interstate commerce
• You transport passengers in interstate commerce

The type of Operating Authority you’re required to get will depend on the type of cargo you plan to haul. If you plan to haul multiple types of commodities, you’ll be required to obtain multiple MC Numbers.
