Brake Safety Week 2025 Is Underway

From August 24–30, commercial motor vehicle inspectors across North America are conducting roadside inspections as part of CVSA’s Brake Safety Week. This annual initiative focuses on the importance of properly functioning and well-maintained brake systems—and this year, inspectors are zeroing in on brake drums and rotors.
These components are critical to brake efficiency and safety. Cracked or broken drums and rotors can lead to catastrophic failures, including debris dislodging during travel and causing damage or injury.
Last year, 12.8% of vehicles were placed out of service during Brake Safety Week. Even during surprise inspections, nearly 1 in 10 trucks failed.
What Inspectors Are Looking For
Brake System Components:

On the other hand, if vehicles with critical vehicle inspection item violations are found, they may be placed out of service if they meet the North American Standard Out-of-Service Criteria. These vehicles may not be operated until the violations are addressed.
