Brake Safety Week 2026 Is Happening Now

From August 23–29, inspectors across North America are conducting roadside inspections as part of the CVSA Brake Safety Week. This annual initiative highlights the importance of properly functioning, well-maintained brake systems—and this year, inspectors are focusing on brake drums and rotors.

These components are critical to brake efficiency and safety. Cracked or broken drums and rotors can lead to catastrophic failures, including debris dislodging while in motion and causing damage or injury.

Last year, 12.8% of vehicles were placed out of service during Brake Safety Week. Even during surprise inspections, nearly 1 in 10 trucks failed.

What Inspectors Are Looking For

Brake System Components:

• Brake drums and rotors (2026 focus area) 

• Air brake mechanical components

• Steering axle air brakes

• Brake adjustments

• Antilock braking systems (ABS)

• Air loss rate and low-pressure warning devices

• Tractor protection systems

• Leaks, cracks, or worn parts

Driver & Vehicle Compliance:

• CDL and medical examiner’s certificates
  

• Hours of service (HOS) and RODS

• Drug/alcohol possession or use

• Seat belt use 

• Vehicle inspection reports

• Cargo securement

• Coupling devices, driveline, fuel systems, lighting, tires, and more

On the other hand, if vehicles with critical vehicle inspection item violations are found, they may be placed out of service if they meet the North American Standard Out-of-Service Criteria. These vehicles may not be operated until the violations are addressed.
